Although I am 99.9% sure that no one else on the planet has had this exact situation, any advice from related issues would be great. After I had my daughter, I was in a car accident. I was 3 days postpartum, and my milk had just come in the night before the accident. I had punctured both my lungs, had bilateral chest tubes, and fractured my C-2 vertebrae, which resulted in a halo brace for 7 weeks. For anyone not familiar with a halo brace, it is basically a metal cage to support your neck that has a big plastic vest that goes down to your middle abdomen with two holes for your breasts.I couldn't hold my daughter close to me, much less breast feed her. I could not lie down due to the fact that over half my ribs were broken. Also, my right breast was internally split in half via seatbelt from about the 3 o clock position to about an inch past my nipple on the other side. Also, my daughter was born with her intestines outside her body (gastroschisis), and she was not able to breastfeed after birth, so I was pumping milk for her. After the accident, I was unable to do pretty much anything, including pumping for her. I did have family and friends that pumped for me, and a few nurses.I was on a massive amount of pain medication,so I don't even know if Stacia was getting any of the milk I was able to express.A week after the accident, I stopped pumping. All that being said, my husband and I are going to try for another baby in Febuary.
I have had 2 reconstructive surgeries on my right breast, and have both a scar underneath my breast, and one halfway around the left side of my arealoa, which is the side with most of the damage. It is almost a complete semicircle, and I am pretty sure the ducts were cut.I have no feeling on the lower side of that breast. My other breast got an abcess that ruptured where the lower breast meets the chest, which had to be filled and packed with gauze. A piece of gauze was left in my chest at the hospital, and it worked it's way out between my breasts towards the bottom. I also have no feeling on one entire side of my left breast. The accident was 6 years ago. I am now a labor and delivery nurse, and a breastfeeding advisor and educator. I help women all the time with breastfeeding, but my situation is so different that I just need some type of insight. Is it even remotley possible that I may be able to breast feed my future baby? Technically, I think I have one working breast between the two of them, and I have a lot of will and hope. Sorry so long, you see how it is hard to explain it in a short version.THANK YOU!!!!!

Nope you are right, you are probably the only person in the world with that situation. I am so sorry that happened to you. MY advice is, "Yes you can breastfeed!" You may not be able to give you LO 100% Breast Milk from you, BUT you can still breastfeed and do things like supplement at the breast. Remember breastfeeding is so much more than giving milk to your baby. Join this group and I am confident we will help you define your own success. Trust me this is a fantastic group of ladies, who will love on you more than you ever imagined.

Welcome! Wow, you've been through a lot.

You definitely CAN breast feed, no matter how much milk you make. We've had women here who were able to produce a full supply with just one breast, so your undamaged/less damaged breast is definitely a plus. Even if you can't produce a full supply, your future baby/ies will benefit from any amount you can give them, even if you have to supplement. More important than how much milk they get is the kind of relationship you can build with them through nursing. Good luck TTC!
